q      Faculty paid tribute to Normita Larsen, a long-time ESL teacher, who recently passed away in the Philippines.

Academic Dean's Report

  1. ESL 4-TOEFL Progression:  Dr. Prager asked faculty and staff to explain to students why the ESL progression from ESL 4 forward is not always numerical.  The optimal progression for TOEFL is:

ESL 4→ESL 5→Business English→ESL 6→ARW→TOEFL.

Students should complete this sequence before taking TOEFL.  Upon the recommendation of teachers and student services associates, students may enroll in ESL 5 and Business English simultaneously, since ESL 5 is a co-requisite as well as prerequisite for Business English.  The same holds for ESL 6 and ARW.

  1. School on-line resources:  She also reviewed developments in the school’s on-line resources.  For example, updated syllabi, handbooks, and back issues of the Student Newsletter are now available on-line. She will spend time one-on-one with any faculty member who would like a hands-on introduction to the Spanish-American Institute Library’s automated Catalog and electronic databases.
